Protect and Defend

Welcome to my blog, Protect and Defend. You don’t have to understand me. You only have to agree with me. I can live with losing the good fight, but I can not live with not fighting that good fight at all. - Publius

I know what you are against

But tell me what you are for. I know those on the Left are against the war, but I still don’t know what they are for? Is it a complete and instant withdrawal from Iraq? Is it a slow withdrawal from Iraq? Do they want to stay the course? How do they intend on fighting terrorism? With 85 days to go before the November elections, I question whether there is going to be a big turn over of power from Republicans to Democrats because I question what the Democrats are going to do once they get in power.

I know, I know... You ask a Dem what they're for, and you get "What the GOP is against."

How childish.

Brooke, my comment here was serious actually. I mean I think I have a pretty firm grasp on the Republican Party Platform, a lot of which I don’t agree with mostly in dealings with big business and the rich. But, I don’t know what the Democratic Party Platform advocates. Can I assume it is the opposite of the Republican Party? If so does this mean the Democratic Party is for gay marriage, flag burning, pro-abortion, against the war on terror, in favor of affirmative action, in favor of illegal immigration (can go either way because of big business wanting illegal immigration too along with some Republicans), against prayer in school, against religious symbols on public or private land, etc.?
I guess it is just that I know what Republicans are for and what they are against, and I just don’t know the same is true for Democrats.
To me a Democrat is a Libertarian who wants higher taxes.

That's a good question. Speaking as a liberal who's NOT a Democrat, I'd like to know the answer myself. Because the Democrats aren't a "big tent party": their problem is that the tent has fallen down and nobody seems to know what to do with all those poles and ropes and stakes and such, and the directions are right there in front of them! From what I remember of the platform, at least as much as it was covered in the media during the 2004 election, their "platform" consists of a whole lot of mealy-mouthed mush that's big on platitudes and very short on specifics and policy.

I WOULD support a Democratic party (like, with my dollars and my time) if they had a platform that (checking your list) came out FOR gay marriage (not "partnerships" - marriage), FOR the First Amendment (including freedom of expression), FOR reproductive choice without restrictive government interference, FOR smart immigration policy, AGAINST government-sponsored and led and enforced prayer in schools, FOR separation of church and state.

Oh, and for good measure, being against the war in Iraq.

They'd be FOR a lot of other things, too, but I don't have the time or energy left in my fingers to list them all.

But, right now, I don't hear much of that. I hear a lot of Republican-lite DLC gibberish.

QD, as a person I like you. But politically, you scare the hell out of me; much as I must you. But if the Democratic Party went with your platform I doubt any of them could get elected outside of the North East and the West Coast, or like the past two presidential elections. Because the only thing we agree on on your list is the immigration policy and you and I are lightyears away from agreeing on that either.

BUT at least they would stand for something. And they would not be peddling themselves as recycled Republicans.

But I'm not a Democrat, so why should they listen to me?

No, you don't scare me for a minute.

Come on QD, don’t I scare you at least a little? Aren’t I the Religious Right, ultra-conservative, Neanderthal that you dislike so much?

I NEVER said you were a Neanderthal! Ever.

You seem very Cro-Magnon to me.
