White Males aren’t good enough?

From the Washington Post Sports Section on the George Mason University’ Gunston mascot (June 2, 2006).

The school’s fuzzy green mascot, who became a national media star this spring, could be out of a job by next basketball season. The athletic department is planning to convene a mascot focus group by the end of this month, which will propose about a half-dozen possible replacements. A new mascot likely will be chosen by the end of the summer and unveiled sometime during the fall semester.
Gunston will continue to represent the school mostly at youth functions – “he’s not being offed,” Associate Athletic Director for Marketing Andy Ruge said reassuringly – but will not loner be the Patriot’s primary mascot…
A white male mascot of a Patriot was retired because he did not fully represent one of the most diverse campuses in the country, and Ruge said he “would be shocked” if the new mascot were a white male.

i am not going to bash white males- i am married to the best one. why can't the student body elect someone- or have someone volunteer? if it is that diverse, there's a good chance a representative of the diversity will be picked.

i'm not going to bite on your title :)

let them elect a mutant.... you know.. the perfect politically correct trooper,...
...a guy with hair like a white guy, can jump like a black guy, has brains like an asian, can row like a polynesian, can pole vault like a Eastern Euro, is open to all discourse like a liberal, and hates everything diverse like a republican...
There, i said it! that is so damn liberating I tell ya'....
(ok, I'll go back to my doghouse now...)

Betmo, here is the thing, the mascot for the school is the Patriots, and the school is named after a white guy, George Mason. The school is very diverse, but still majority white. They still use an old Revolutionary War three-corner hat for some of their logos. So here is the thing, if the school is still majority white, was named after a white guy and this statue sits at the front of the school, and the term Patriot was meant to be a Revolutionary War Patriot, I just want to know what is wrong with having a mascot that is dressed in Revolutionary War-style dress and has a big head and still be white? The UVA Cavalier is a white guy and so is the Nebraska Cornhusker. Does the fact that Notre Dame is not majority Irish mean they should change their mascot too?
Not an attack, just a question. So come on, bite a little.

Truth, someone that rows like a Polynesian? What does that even mean?

Polynesians were massive warriors who rowed seriously large canoes from island to island to do battle and then had to row back regardless of victory of defeat.... sometimes 50 miles of ocean or more.

Truth, why not say the Vikings then who did the same thing? Or are you also trying to get rid of the white guys too?

I gave you the "Hair like a white guy",... what more do you want?...

Seriously, I know your point is well made,.. and your reply to Betmo is salient. I was going to rant something about PC, but as Sarah reminded me... PC is such an over-used word that I am actually considering dropping it from my venacular and finding a more suitable word.
The basis of your premise is logic-tight to me, but its like bulling your head into a brick wall,... people just get the shakes at the mere appearance of white imagery in anything, no matter how innocent the matter. I'm done writing about it in my own blog,... tired of getting hammered.

Truth, it’s when we give up that we lose. I don’t want everything to be white. I am not asking for a white guy on the Harlem Globetrotters, I don’t want to see Seinfeld on BET, I don’t want Jean Claude VanDumbass in a Kung-Fu Movie, and if I go into a Chinese restaurant they don’t need to have photos of Rome on the walls. But, how many American Indians go to FSU? Shouldn’t their mascot more closely resemble their student body?
Regardless of whether the term PC is over used or not it still exists.

i agree publius- i think i missed that for some reason. the binghamton university patriots were changed to the bearcats(yeah- i think that they were so tired of the rigamarole they just made something up) a few years ago. my bigger question is- why the hell do you still need a mascot for anyway?

i know that this sounds corny- but i just wish people saw each other as people. the 'pc' people are trying to overcompensate for the adversities that the white communities put upon non-whites- and that just isn't possible. if we just treated people as fellow humans- we wouldn't have to worry about white, green, purple- or polynesian.

I graduated from Mason when it was still part of UVA. Back then, we might have had a mascot, but the teams were so awful that we didn't pay much attention to either the mascot or the teams.

Isn't a mascot supposed to be fun? But now it's become a PC issue.

athletic department is planning to convene a mascot focus group

Time could be better spent on something else!

Don’t forget about the NCAA also cracking down on any college that uses an Indian of any form as a mascot unless that school can prove that local Indian tribes support the use of the mascot and find it shows respect for that tribe and not ridicule. Or to translate, if you are a big school like FSU you can get away with it.

One of the best mascots is the white polar bear of the Toronto Maple Leafs!

During the hockey season, I would always giggle when I saw him peeking over the boards at the game!

Yikes - what about the Chicago Blackhawks? I'm sure people have said something, even though the name was used as a term of respect for Chief Black Hawk, who was born in a tribe that was located in modern-day Illinois.

Sarah, don’t forget about the Washington Redskins, Atlanta Braves, and Cleveland Indians.
I am waiting for the Dallas Cowboys to change their mascot to just a blue star because a white cowboy does not reflect the diversity of the city of Dallas or the state of Texas.
