Protect and Defend

Welcome to my blog, Protect and Defend. You don’t have to understand me. You only have to agree with me. I can live with losing the good fight, but I can not live with not fighting that good fight at all. - Publius

What Democrats and Republicans think.

Democrats think all Republicans are racist, bigoted, Confederate-flag waving, homophobic, xenophobic, and sexist Christian white males with the exception of a few token Uncle Tom black people, every Cuban in Florida, and some misguided minorities.

Republicans think all Democrats are self-hating whites, whiney minorities looking for a hand out, Hollywood celebrities, homosexuals, everyone working in the media unless the work for Fox News, Jewish people, academics, and atheists.

Anyone think I am wrong here?

hmmm- this is a damned if i do- damned if i don't moment. too quiet of a sunday? i think that most people think that way about 'them'- you know the elusive 'them'. they don't think that about people they know. for example, i think that you described limbaugh very accurately in that statement but my neighbor down the street who voted for reagan, bush and bush is a paragon of virtue.

i think that we inherently make exceptions for people we know- which is why we need to take a greater interest in local politics. very easy to bash the big names- but when you shop at the local market with john smith running for mayor- not as easy to villify and you are more apt to vote on record and not be taken in by campaigning. not as much anyway.

as for the repubs i know- i have a friend from high school who fits the bill almost verbatim of the repub synopsis- and i have a lesbian friend who fits the bill for the dems. you tell me.

(warning: the following IS just an opinion)
... you're right,.. that pretty much sums it up; at least the way the conventional wisdom of gross generalizations paints it. I could go into detail to rebuf every single one of those assertions (at least as it pertains to me, an independent conservative) but some liberal will retort to every one of my points with yet other points and the house of Publius will be the house of urine in short order...
Besides these cliches, let me give you the differences I've gathered from both life-long experience and (lately) from galloping the blogosphere in two particular areas.
One is....Humor.
Republicans have a better sense of humor. They just do. Not in every instance but in general. I think it boils to that there are not to many shades of gray to their analysis of most issues, and that, in and of itself makes it easier to be self-effacing, lighter in banter, and less self-restrospective. There is much more "black and white" to their reasoning and not too much philosophical relativity...

Democrats take the care-burden so personally that they are mostly near-pissed half the time. You can feel it in their conversations. In my humble opinion guilt, (I know this is touchy) is a major part of that. Not saying that is bad or good,.. but I think Democrats have a virtual monopoly on guilt,...just pent-up hate towards Republicans, their failure to make them "see the light" and the social condition in general. The term "bleeding heart liberal" is not a cliche for nothing. Again, these are grand observation folks, God help me if I cause anybody's panties to tie a wedgie because of this.
The second diffence to moi is:

Depth of thinking.
I think I enjoy chatting with liberals more because in spite of being diametrically opposed to most of their core issues, they have a way of trying to find the "5th leg of the cat" to everything. Their musings appeal to my sense of inquiry and dialogue. At times it can become a circular argument as well, but that is short price to pay for good mental dueling. You may have to really pound on an argument in a few angles before a Democrat will step back and go "hmmmm, I agree with you" but if you do so respectfully and sarcasm-free (which is a reason I've pissed off so many in my own blog) you will find them to be just at reachable,... but less predictable as well.

all i can say is- that in my neck of the woods- the right leaners who write into the letters to the editor section of the paper(yes, they get printed with alarming frequency here- humor)are grouchy, ultra christian, ultra catholic curmudgeons. the left leaners- are whiny and sound like they need a nap. i like to think that i have a sense of humor- tp- so i am not sure where i fit in. :)

I try not to make such generalizations - I know WAY too many people who bust the stereotypes.

Betmo, having done research on political ideologies, I can tell you that Catholics are actually split pretty evenly Republican and Democrat, remember Kerry and Kennedy are both Democrats. White Protestants are about 85% Republican but the same is not true for Catholics.
