Way to Go Jeff Dave

From today’s Washington Post on the Capital (Washington Post, June 2, 2006).

When the huge statue “Freedom” that sits atop the dome was originally designed in the 1850s, it was supposed to have a soft “liberty” cap on its head. Jefferson Davis, then secretary of war, nixed that idea, because the old liberty cap was a Roman symbol of the freed slave. A helmet with eagle feathers was substituted.

History lesson here, Jeff Dave is of course Jefferson Davis, the first and only President of the Confederate States of America and for whom parts of Route 1 and numerous other roads are named after in Virginia.
