Muslim Protests and World Cup Prostitution

From today’s Washington Post Sports Section (June 9, 2006).

At the Pascha, a 12-story building that advertises itself as Europe's biggest brothel, the working girls are preparing for what they hope will be a surge in business as more than a million soccer fans flock to Germany for the World Cup, which begins Friday.
At the same time, the Pascha's workforce of about 120 women is bracing for what some fear will be increased competition in the world's oldest profession. Buying and selling sex is entirely legal in Germany, prompting estimates that tens of thousands of foreign prostitutes will enter the country looking for business during the month-long tournament.
"Of course we'll have more customers," said Armin Lobscheid, the managing director of Pascha, a Moorish-theme bordello with whirlpools, beauty salons and an entire floor staffed by transsexuals. "If someone wants to party here, it doesn't matter if their team has won or lost."
The Pascha normally caters to about 1,000 paying clients a day, but Lobscheid said he is expecting a 50 percent increase during the World Cup. He's also reserving 30 rooms for soccer fans who want someplace to stay during the tournament, at the rate of $260 a night, not including the cost of sex.
The prospect of a prostitution boom during the World Cup, however, has stirred almost as many passions as the debate over who will win the 32-team tournament. Anti-prostitution groups are warning about a potential boom in sex trafficking, predicting that as many as 40,000 prostitutes will be forcibly imported into Germany by pimps and smugglers…
The combination of soccer and sex has led to other controversies. In April, a group of about 30 protesters, including some armed with knives and clubs, gathered outside the Pascha to demand the removal of a huge mural on the side of the building featuring a scantily clad woman and the national flags of all 32 teams participating in the World Cup.
The protesters were Muslims, angry that the flags of Saudi Arabia and Iran were depicted next to an uncovered female. The Pascha removed the offending flags and apologized.
Prostitution has long been tolerated in Germany, but it officially became legal in 2002. Reliable figures on the sex trade are elusive, but some government statistics suggest that there are as many as 400,000 registered workers in the industry…
Juergen Laggies, a police spokesman, said officers recently inspected 330 places where sex is regularly sold -- from brothels to private apartments. After checking the identification papers of 1,500 women, he said, they found no cases of forced prostitution…
Anti-prostitution groups have assailed German officials for allowing the construction of drive-through "sex shacks" in select cities, as part of a program to encourage prostitutes to get off the streets move to more protected areas. So far, the only sex shack in operation is located in Cologne, although another is under construction in Dortmund; Berlin is considering one as well.
Robert Kilp, a city official who oversees the program in Cologne, said only prostitutes with drug addictions were permitted to work at the site, which consists of several open-bay garages with space for customers to park their cars for a quick encounter. Police regularly patrol the area and social-service counselors try to help the prostitutes with their drug problems. He said about 40 to 50 women sell sex there each night.
Kilp said the program is often misconstrued. He said a U.S. consular official recently visited Cologne to investigate reports that the garages would be a magnet for trouble during the World Cup, but found no problems.
"We don't support drugs and prostitution. We want to get women off drugs and prostitution, so it's really a social service," he said. "Please write in your newspaper that there's absolutely no danger for American boys and girls."

You can see in the photo where two of the flags have been blackened out. It seems that for Muslims in Germany, protesting and trying to get your way also includes a show of force with clubs and knives. Europe has a real problem that they are not facing and I don’t know if they will before it gets too late.

armed with knives and clubs

Still in the 7th Century?

Europe has a real problem that they are not facing...

Exactly so! Muslims will not assimilate; check their history of some 1400 years.

I agree 100% with you.

The whole Denmark cartoon thing definitely woke me up. However, that was not the only thing - All the violent incidents in France and the Netherlands too.

These immigrants are bringing theocratic values to free and democratic countries and they won't change.

Seriously, if Europe wants to survive, they need to look at their immigration policies.

Europe is an aging population with very socialist views on taxation, under 40 hour work weeks, lots of vacation, years off for maternity leave, and they are not sustaining growth through reproduction. Europe actually needs guest workers if they want to continue their socialist-secular societies. The problem, as this example shows, is that Muslim populations in Europe want to force their values and religious doctrines on Europe, and as the Muslim population in Europe grows and the native-born European population shrinks and ages, the Muslim population will force their views even more on Europe, and there will be nothing the Europeans will be able to do about it. Europe as we know it and romanticize about it will soon be gone. Europe has no Minutemen or conservative parties that hold power. None of this will change either unless something traumatic happens in Europe and more specifically in Germany. The Germans were once the most nationalistic country in Europe and it will take another “revolution” in Germany for Europe to not become a Muslim majority in 100 years.

give me a break. If this poster was in this country, it would be conservative christians armed to the teeth and protesting.

It wasn't right of some of them to be carrying weapons, but they were correct - you shouldn't associate countries who deplore practices like prostitution with brothels without permission. It's wrong.

Pat, first only Nevada allows legal prostitution, so I don’t know where you could have a 12 story photo of a naked woman on a whore house in the U.S.
Second, tell me when you have seen “conservative Christians” protest waving clubs and knives much less “armed to the teeth.”
Finally, as far as I know, of the counties depicted on this poster with their national flags, Germany is the only country that allows prostitution. So would this have given Mexican protesters the right to stand outside the brothel carrying clubs and knives, threatening people until the Mexican flag was taken down?
This is the problem with people like you who think this way. You jump on “Christian conservatives” saying they would be armed to the teeth if the poster was displayed in this country, but as prostitution is illegal I don’t know how you could make the comparison. But, I would hope they would protest outside of a 12 story brothel if there was one here in this county.
At the same time you say the Muslims were “correct” for protesting carrying knives and clubs because “you shouldn't associate countries who deplore practices like prostitution with brothels without permission. It's wrong.” Well we don’t have whore houses here either because the conservative Christians deplore practices like prostitution.
The Muslims you forgive but the Christians who are not even mentioned in this story you attacked. Think before you type Pat!
