Protect and Defend

Fatherland Pride

From the Washington Post Sports Section (June 14, 2006).

The World Cup has stirred a new sense of pride in Germans who for decades viewed flag-waving as a shameful reminder of a painful past.
More than 60 years since the end of World War II, and nearly two decades after east and west reunited, Germans are suddenly wearing their patriotism on their sleeves – and cheeks, and heads. Their black, red and gold flag flutters from cars, windows and balconies as never before…
Many have insisted that Germans, after years pondering their role in two world wars and numerous efforts to atone for atrocities, deserve to celebrate like any other nation.
“People have recognized the World Cup offers a once in a lifetime chance to refute all the prejudices against us,” wrote Matthias Matussek, cultural editor of the Spiegel weekly,” to show that national pride is not something dark and evil, but something very natural – even light and celebratory.”

After 60 years it is time for the German Giant to retake its place as the leader of the continent.

I think I know what that last line means... thats if I read Publius the way I've learned to.
The German people are efficient, industrious, proud of their long and sordid history (pre-WW2) and as giving as any other country in spite of being burdened with the yoke of their history,.. a history no too much of their own making, but of a despotic element of cult of personality who rose to power on ill-gotten nationalism. It is long overdue that the new German generation stand on its own accomplishments and beliefs and not be saddled with the ghosts of a horrific past....
At least that is what I THINK he means... but far be it to open my fat lip for anyone else...
Publius... you want to clarify that little nugget before people start inferring here soon?...

Europe’s only hope from becoming a third-world continent will be in a strong Germany. Some of you are more than well aware of the erosion of Western culture, society, religion, democracy, and freedoms that is occurring in Europe right now because of an ever growing Muslim minority that will become a majority within 100 years. It will take a strong sense of nationalism and pride to prevent European society from succumbing to Muslim influences and pressures. France is already bending, Britain is thinking of allowing some communities to practice Muslim law in their communities, Italy has a new leftist government that wants to increase immigration and make thousands of illegal Muslim immigrants into Italian citizens, and the rest of Europe has no great history of nationalism and pride.
Like the EURO which would have failed had Germany not joined in, Europe’s only hope lies in a strong nationalistic Germany.

Sarah, I can tell you that Heidi Klum is not as popular in Germany as you might think her marriage to a non-Germanic Man in Seal set some people against her. When you have “the pinnacle of German beauty” and she does not want to continue that pride in her people, which put a lot of people over there off on her.
