Day Without Immigrants

Tomorrow is a Day Without Immigrants as immigrant groups around the country are asking legal and illegal immigrants to not show up to work, to not go to school, and to not purchase any products or services. In fact, to show support some businesses have already decided to not even open up tomorrow including many in the meat packing industry.
So their children suffer because they are not going to be attending school.
Their wallets suffer because they will not be working.
And the American economy suffers because it means that 12 million illegal immigrants and millions more will not be purchasing goods and services.
But, they can sit at home and sing the National Anthem in Spanish, which not only changes the tune but the words as well.
But, I will leave it at that for now for you all to discuss.

Isn't this what you want? If they're gone, then May first will be a prediction of the future. And as for the whole national anthem thing, if it changes the tune to something that;s easier t sing, it can only be an improvement. Do you think the English are angered because Francis Scott Key changed the words to one of their drinking songs so we could have a national anthem?

So, you don’t care then that they changed the National Anthem including the words, the rhythm, and the language? If they change the National Anthem will that bother you? I am of the belief that we all have breaking points or points in which if we are blasé about something, an event will occur that can make us suddenly get riled up and excited. What will it take for you to look at the situation and decide: enough is enough?

Regardless of any laws passed by Congress, all 12 million illegal immigrants will not get deported tomorrow, or the next day, or even in the next year even if they started to round them all up tomorrow. But, that is the fear tactic used by the pro-illegal immigration side. The truth of the matter is that the 14th Amendment grants automatic citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil, and even though the pro-illegal immigrant side argues that no one should be considered illegal for crossing an “imaginary line,” they know that line separates whether their child is a citizen of this country or a citizen of their homeland, and then they take advantage of that “imaginary line.”
The government is not going to deport U.S. citizens and they are not going to deport illegal aliens who gave birth to a child on American soil and thus an American citizen. The anchor baby loophole has been used for years and will continue to be used for years to come. So many of the 12 million illegal immigrants in this country have had kids here that they won’t be kicked out and in reality all the government can do is deport only a fraction of this total. Families wont be broken up, people who are here legally wont be deported, and those who want the American Dream for their family here in the US will still be able to live that dream regardless of the fact that they broke our laws to do so.

I don't see the National Anthem changing because a group of people decided to change it up, specifically, to get a reaction. I could argue with you all day about why I think they SHOULD change the National Anthem to "AMerica the Beautiful," but this really isn't the place. I do realize that they won't just deport 12 million people and I think I've even mentioned that in previous posts. Ideally, since they're here, there needs to be a way to work with them, get everything on the up and up, and then find a sensible way to regulate for those who do want to come here. There is a place somewhere in the middle of all of this where everyone can come together to reach a positive outcome for everyone. Are you willing to find it?

And find a happy medium? Sure, I would be happy to do that for you. But, you simply can not reward these people for coming here illegally. They did that once before and now the problem is only worse.
Either they have to be tough on them on lax on them, but no middle ground is really going to solve the problem it is only going to be a continuation of the status quo which I am sure many out there want too. My fear is that bicultural societies that do not share a common language simply do not last. And the people who are here now are not assimilating like the millions of immigrants who came here in the past had done. My ancestors did not all come from countries that spoke English, but they learned it once they got here and although they might have had an accent, they learned the language and learned to speak it well. The U.S. has been the world’s greatest multicultural experiment, but the experiment always had the same results, that we were all Americans. Those who are coming here now want to live here and work here and enjoy all the freedoms of being here, but they do not want to become Americans, they either want to maintain their own national identities or they want to change what is America.
Maybe there really isn’t an “American” anymore and instead we are just a piece of land with made-up boundaries that vote for a small group of individuals to become our supposed leaders. But, I would like to think American is more than that, it just is looking less and less like that everyday.

I will agree with you on this, if people are going to come to this country and expect the rights of being an American, they should make the effort to BE Americans. There is nothing wrong with being an American and being proud of your heritage from another country at the same time. Again, singing the National Anthem in spanish isn't that big of a deal to me, in fact, I just read on Drudge where "Dubya" was doing it on the campaign trail...ooops! Be proud of who you are, and where you came from, but you're right that you should also remember where you are too.

Well, I have to say that just because Bush did it doesn’t mean that it makes it ok.
And don’t get me wrong, I am proud of my heritage too and that heritage includes being an American. The people who are protesting now are proud of their heritage and proud of the fact that they cheated the system. What these people don’t understand is that being an American is not a right it is a privilege and a privilege that comes with responsibility. Those responsibilities are to pay your taxes, to register for the draft when you reach the age of 18, and to obey the laws. Really the government only asks three things of its citizens for the privilege of being an American, those who are here illegally have not done any of the three and I believe have lost the privilege of becoming an American.
