More Stats

Thirty percent of black men in their mid-thirties with only a high school diploma have served time in prison, and 60% of black men in their mid-thirties without a high school diploma have served jail time according to a study by Bruce Western, a sociologist at Princeton (Washington Post, March 22, 2006).
It’s not just George W. Bush, but the Democratic Party as well that doesn’t care about black people or they would not let so many go to prison. What is sad about these figures is that it only takes into account those who go to prison and not those who are affected by black-on-black crime. I am left to wonder what percentage of black men in their mid-thirties without a high school diploma are in jail or have been killed in a violent crime?

Could you elaborate on how people going to jail means that neither George Bush nor Democrats care about black people? People go to jail because they make bad choices. I can care about people all day long, but if they do the crime, they've got to do the time, Baby!

If you have 60% of a population going to jail then something is not being done for them. Somehow they are being lost in the system. I am not talking about No Child Left Behind; I am talking about allowing an entire group of people to be left behind with no alternative than crime. We have people in this country so concerned with the ills in the world instead of taking notice that an entire generation of black men are all winding up in prison or victims of violent crime. No, I don’t have a solution, but someone somewhere better have one, otherwise these statistics are only going to get worse.

Keep in mind, some people actually WANT to be in prison. It's a better life on the inside then they feel they can achieve on the outside. The answer would seem to be a charismatic leader who isn't a fraud. But these days, that's a tough order. I hate to blame the media, because I still feel, at the end of the day, each person has choices that they have to make, and the end result is a product of those choices. However, with the glamourization of the "thug" lifestyle these days through video games, music and outlets like MTV, of course young people want that lifestyle. We need someone who is "cool" to slap these kids upside the head, tell them "pull up your pants, put your hat on straight, speak properly and act like a friggin' human being!" I can dream, can't I?

But, Cosby tried, and they gave him hell for it.

I'll go back to my comment that they need someone "cool" to speak to the kids. Russell Simmons might be a good choice, we just need to put that whack job of a wife of his somewhere where she can't undo all the good he's done. Alot of the mainstream recording artists have a chance to do some real good, but prefer to pretend they live the thug lifestyle and promote it to the kids. It seems to sell more.

Well Simmons and his wife are getting divorced and I am sure she is going to get more than her share of his wealth, so he is probably going to be busy. As for the gangsta-rappers, I don’t know how hardcore you still are when you own a home that has more bathrooms than most houses do total rooms.
